Strategies for Progressive Action

 

1)     SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC PARTY ACTIVITIES

a)     Attend Genesee County Democratic Party meetings

b)     Support Democratic Party fundraisers

c)      Promote State Democratic Party membership

 

2)     PLAN & EXECUTE EVENTS & ACTIVITIES TO EXPRESS PROGRESSIVE VALUES

a)     One time events

i)        Protests & marches

ii)      Support striking workers

b)     Ongoing Activities

i)        Request groups to provide seminars & training (i.e., Paul Wellstone Foundation, Move On)

ii)      Organize petition drives or other grass roots activities to promote progressive values

iii)    Support organizations that promote progressive values

iv)    Boycott organizations that do not support progressive values

 

3)     FORM ALLIANCES WITH LIKE MINDED GROUPS

a)     Create liaison positions to join local progressive groups to keep us informed of upcoming events, issues, and pending legislation. Encourage membership in our group or involvement in our activities. Suggested groups to liaison with:

i)        Sierra Club

ii)      Michigan Citizens for Peace, Veterans for Peace

iii)    A.C.L.U.

iv)    N.A.A.C.P.

v)      Greenpeace

vi)    P.F.L.A.G.

vii)  Poverty Round Table

viii)Move On

ix)    Labor groups

x)      Local Churches

xi)    National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood

xiii)College clubs & organizations

 

b)     Explore the pros & cons of a state and/or national affiliation

c)      Encourage & support the development of progressive groups in other communities

d)     Create a monthly calendar of events sponsored by allied progressive groups

 

4)     DEVELOP A RECOMMENDED LIST OF MEDIA SOURCES THAT EDUCATE & PROMOTE PROGRESSIVE ISSUES

a)     Websites

c)      TV & Radio

5)     DEVELOP A COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK

a)     Radio

i)        Petition local radio to sponsor progressive programs

b)     Write frequent letters to newspaper editors

i)        Hold a writing seminar to teach effective letter writing techniques

ii)      Set up a monthly rotation to schedule letter writing by our members

c)      Create a phone tree and system for communicating with our members

d)     Create a postcard to distribute to the public explaining our mission and values with contact & meeting information

e)     Create a cable television program on local access channels

f)        Produce literature using values language that promotes progressive issues

g)     Explore the pros & cons of developing a website

i)        Set up a free e-mail account to use as a tool for fielding inquiries and sending out information

ii)      Set up a free chat group/listserv on the internet

 

6)     FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

a)     Hold house parties to watch progressive videos or discuss books

b)     Produce buttons and/or T-shirts for sale

c)      Hold an annual fundraising dinner
